David Young’s education includes a B.M. in Music Education with Performer’s Certificate, Eastman School, a M.M. and a D.M.A., in double bass performance, USC. His teachers have included Oscar Zimmerman, Peter Mercurio, and Dennis Trembly. He is a former member of the Rochester Philharmonic, the Dallas Symphony, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Formerly he also served as principal bass of the Long Beach Symphony and the Santa Barbara Symphony. He is currently principal bass with Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and principal bass with the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra.
In the teaching realm, he is faculty at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, teaching bassists privately. He also leads the Colburn School Double Bass Ensemble, a performing bass ensemble group, and he develops and presents citywide bass seminar days called the “Bass Masters” series.
He is also the originator of the String Family Players, a string quintet group of professional musicians that has visited as many as 100 schools per year, bringing music to children under the auspices of the Music Center Education Division, L.A. Philharmonic, Long Beach Symphony, Philharmonic Society of Orange County and many others. He also gives lectures and presentations about the wonders of opera.
